The Best Anti Aging Products Aren’t The Best. Why?
Healthy Aging November 23rd, 2009If you’re beginning to notice the irritating signs of skin ageing such as wrinkles and skin sagging then you might have spent a lot of your time searching for the very best anti aging products on the market.
Those captivating television ads and glossy magazine ads just seem so convincing that those anti aging creams must be great.
But if that describes you and you’re searching for the best anti aging products you need to ask yourself a preliminary question before deciding if the products work well. You need to ask yourself whether those anti aging skin care products are safe to use.
There’s a range of chemical ingredients used in so many of the big name skin care and anti aging products that you see commonly on the shelves of your local stores. Today I want to talk about one of those chemical ingredients called Propylene Glycol.
You might even have some Propylene Glycol in your cars radiator right now because it’s an essential ingredient in antifreeze. And the EPA tells us that anyone who works with Propylene Glycol needs to don protective gloves as well as goggles in case the Propylene Glycol comes in contact with their skin.
If you go to the Cosmetic Safety Database and search on Propylene Glycol you’ll find that it is listed as being an ingredient in 690 anti aging products as well as 118 facial treatments and 945 anti aging moisturizers, as well as many other personal products.
And the Cosmetic Safety Database links Propylene Glycol to cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity, allergies and immunotoxicity, irritation to the skin and a whole host of other nasty health repercussions.
Maybe the glossy advertising tells you that those skin care products are the best anti aging products on the market, but if they happen to contain Propylene Glycol then I would avoid them like the plague, and the same applies to a wide range of other chemical ingredients.
There is no requirement for the FDA to test to see whether ingredients used in anti ageing products are safe for people to put on their skin. So the manufacturers use these ingredients because they can, and because they’re cheap.
So if you’re a woman noticing those first signs and symptoms of ageing skin what do you do? Do you avoid all anti ageing products and skin care products and just accept the fact of wrinkles? No.
The well-known big name skin care lines may be contaminated with chemical ingredients but there is still very small niche anti aging companies seeking to produce the highest quality anti aging products that use safe ingredients.
These companies, all very small and one in particular, make high quality products. But they use naturally occurring ingredients that are known to be extremely effective with demonstrated skin care properties, but these natural ingredients are highly expensive.
So you’d have to assume that their anti aging products are also highly expensive but in fact they aren’t. These companies cannot afford to factor the costs of television advertising and magazine advertising into the price of the product so they choose not to advertise and so these costs are not included in the price as they are for the big name brands making these products very price competitive.
The good news is that the best anti aging products are made by a company you’ve probably never heard of. But when you do you’ll be amazed at how good (and how safe) these products are.
