A fairly common issue that individuals are often forced to deal with at some point is a condition known as scabies. This parasitic infestation effects people from all walks of life and are passed on from host to host very easily. Scabies are classically defined as an infestation of the epidermis, or skin, by parasites of a microscopic nature known as mites. They go by the scientific name Sarcoptes scabiei, and will lay eggs in the skin of a human which will hatch and become adult mites, further complicating the infestation.

This parasite is can be pass on from person to person through simple physical contact with a carrier. They can also be acquired from from simply sharing various everyday objects that can harbor the parasite, including beds, furniture, clothing, and towels.

There are various symptoms of this issue that will become noticeable. The most obvious sign of an infestation are mild to severe itching, especially at night. This itching often leads to intense scratching, and in turn, open sores that can become infected. Often, bite marks or small lesions can be observed, along with red, dry, and scaly skin. Of all the cancers caused by asbestos dust (mesothelioma), pericardial mesothelioma is the most rare, accounting for a fraction of all cases (5%). It is a cancer that grows on the pericardium (the lining of the heart). This is a delicate ‘film’, and any infection on the pericardium can have deadly consequences.

Once an individual has been diagnosed with pericardial mesothelioma they are offered three different treatment options. These are radiation, surgery and chemotherapy. Pericardial mesothelioma is extremely challenging to treat (due to the intricacies involved in removing the tumours from the pericardium), and a patient’s odds of survival are slim. All three methods have a poor success rate mainly due to the fact that pericardial mesothelioma is detected in the mature stages of development. (The reason for this is mainly because in the early stages of the cancer the symptoms resemble those of diseases like pneumonia). The prognosis for a patient undergoing treatment at this point (mature stage) is typically less than a year.
