Johnson & Johnson manufactures the Acuvue brand of contact lenses. This brand includes the Acuvue Oasys, Acuvue Advance, Acuvue 2, and 1-Day Acuvue lenses. Acuvue lenses use a patented technique called HYDRACLEAR which keeps the lenses moist and comfortable by blending in a silicon wetting agent.

The Acuvue 2 COLOURS is used for enhancing or changing eye color and will not correct vision. All the other models discussed here will correct near or farsightedness. There are 10 different colors available with the Acuvue 2 COLOURS.

With the Oasys lenses you may choose one of two replacement schedules. First, you can take them out and clean them on a daily basis for up to two weeks before replacing them with fresh lenses. You can also continuously wear them for up to six nights until trading them for a fresh set of lenses. The Acuvue Advance are replaced after two weeks of daily cleaning. You can wear the Acuvue 2 continuously for as long as six nights before using a fresh pair or you can go for two weeks with daily cleaning before using a fresh pair of lenses. Since gas permeable lenses are more durable than soft contacts, they can be worn for a longer period of time without replacement. Some wearers will use the same pair of contacts for two or three years.

When choosing contact lenses you usually have a choice of two (the third hard lenses are somewhat out-dated now); soft contact lenses, which are the most widespread and gas permeable contact lenses (GP). GP contact lenses are often favored though as their benefits outweigh those of the soft lenses.

Gas permeable contact lenses can also be called rigid gas permeable lenses (RGP) and oxygen permeable lenses. Most GPs have silicone in them, making them more flexible than the PMMA lenses, and it is oxygen permeable, meaning that oxygen passes through the GP lenses. This allows your eyes to breathe and leads to better eye health as oxygen is necessary for them to work.

Soft lenses are immediately comfortable. The only disadvantage of GP’s is that they are less comfortable than soft lenses at first. However, most people adapt to them quickly. If you stop wearing them for about a week or so your eyes will have to re-adjust to them.

GP contact lenses contain silicone, which in itself does not contain water, therefore protein, lipids and other mineral deposits from your tear ducts will not develop on the lenses.
