How To Discover If You Have Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Last week I went with my girlfriend to get her hair done. She had spent a considerable amount of time driving me around while I was getting my car worked on, so I kind of owed her. It’s one of those give and take things that are necessary for a healthy relationship.

While we were waiting for her turn, I kept dozing off. She kept elbowing me in the gut to wake me up. But when she was actually getting her hair done, I was a mess. Afterwards she asked why I had stayed up so late the night before. When I told her I had gotten my normal eight hours, she became worried.

This worried my girlfriend. Her brother had a big problem with sleep apnea. One of the symptoms is snoring, and he used to keep his whole family awake at night. That is one of the symptoms. So when he checked it out with the doctor, they learned the dangers of untreated sleep apnea.

So when they went to the doctor, he went over all the symptoms with them. And the problem with sleep apnea is that many of the symptoms are very similar to those of other conditions. Headaches, being tired all the time, waking up frequently during the night.

A Growing Concern: Childhood Hypertension

blood pressure No Comments »

High blood pressure, or hypertension, at one time was believed to be strictly associated with adults, with the possibility of contracting it growing larger with age. But nowadays, higher numbers of children suffer from hypertension, and more attention is being paid to this situation. One percent of children below the age of 12 and up to 6% of teenagers suffer from this problem, as evidenced by a number of studies. If a child’s blood pressure exceeds that of 95% of others in his age group it is considered to be hypertension. To identify the cause of hypertension in children is becoming a significant concern.

Everyone recognizes that there are more and more obese people in the U.S. each year. What is often overlooked is that this problem is not limited to only adults. A startling 33% of children in this country are thought to be overweight to some extent. And this is the primary cause of hypertension in children.

Knowing the Essential Facts About Essential Hypertension

blood pressure No Comments »

Essential hypertension is also known as primary hypertension. This type of hypertension is said to be essential or primary hypertension because it is basically, its own primary cause. This is to say the medical community can’t find any underlying cause for it. The patient simply has hypertension and that is the bottom line!

Dealing With Essential Hypertension

Usually a patient’s treatment for essential hypertension will include medication. This not to say such things as alcohol consumption and weight control are ignored, but since these things by definition are not causes for essential hypertension, usually it will take hypertension medication to control it. Still, essential hypertension can be controlled and so, it is not seen as a serious ailment so long as it is controlled without some unusual complication.

The Overall View

Some hypotheses state that essential hypertension does indeed have an underlying cause but as of yet no one has figured out what it is. The reason some think this is because sometimes one patient will respond to a particular treatment while another patient will be unaffected by the same treatment. Still, this is just speculation and really it is unnecessary to pinpoint an underlying cause.

Hypertension and White Coat Syndrome

One of my client was speaking about the difference in her spouse’s blood pressure reading. When it is taken in home it is somewhere between normal and slightly high. But when it is taken at doctor’s clinic it reads very high.

By seeing the doctor her husband’s blood pressure was raising. My client wondered this way. But her husband thought he was not very much nervous by seeing the doctor. But he did admit that he could been subconsciously affected.

Her husband may be suffering from “White Coat Syndrome,” or “White Coat Hypertension.”

A person’s blood pressure may be raised in either a doctor’s office or even an office setting. However it reads normal at home. It may affect 10 to 20 percent of the adult population.

Blood pressure may differ when using a blood pressure cuff that is very small and that results in a high blood pressure read. At time the nurses and other medical professionals make take incorrect reading.

The risk may be smaller than chronic high blood pressure, but it is larger than normal. Now the question that needed an answer is Is this syndrome pose a health risk? And the answer is yes.
