Alcohol abuse is the excessive consumption of unnecessary amounts of alcohol. Though there are numerous definitions of alcohol abuse, they all come down to intake of substances in uncontrolled amounts. Psychiatrists also say that it leads to negative behavior.

Clinics also came up with a definition and concluded that the symptoms of alcohol abuse are evident even if the user has not withdrawn from his dependence on alcohol. Alcoholism is used to mean the same as abuse of alcohol, though the two are hardly synonymous.

People who drink alcohol, sometimes cannot control the amount of consumption and then lose control over their behavior. Such people need to consume alcohol everyday and cannot lead a successful social life. This in turn results in broken marriages, low performance at work, and even not going for work. The interest in social life is lost and they become much conserved.
